Dining in the Wildwoods: Throw caution and calories to the wind!
Tourism Media Kit The Wildwoods, N.J. - Imagine enjoying a romantic dinner as fishing vessels glide into port with the day's catch. Or, think how much fun it would be to begin your day with a stack of fluffy pancakes dripping with butter and syrup, watching morning bike riders pedal along the Boardwalk, all the while thinking ahead to lunch that could be pizza, curly fries or a hoagie topped off with ice cream and a promise that you'll worry about cholesterol, fat grams and calories later.

That's what it's like when you vacation in the Wildwoods where there are restaurants and menus for every appetite, every budget and virtually every taste -- from Key West cuisine to Mexican fajitas, Chinese egg rolls to Italian specialties.

Outdoor dining, usually overlooking the ocean, the bay or the inland waterway is one way to have it all: cool breezes, a great view and probably some good music thrown in. The decor is courtesy of Mother Nature as sailboats glide along, sightseeing boats or a paddle-wheeler passes by as the sun sinks slowly toward the horizon, leaving vibrant streaks of color in the evening sky. Several restaurants offer dock facilities for patrons who prefer to arrive by boat to enjoy crabs, chilled shrimp cocktail or raw bar specialties as fresh as you can get anywhere.

The restaurant renaissance that started years ago in Cape May has spilled over into the Wildwoods and a growing number of gourmet restaurants are scattered throughout the community, each of them garnering superb reviews from critics and patrons alike. Upscale restaurants offer memorable surroundings, serving remarkable cuisine with attentive service for that perfect evening touched with romance, candlelight and delicious food.

Most restaurants offer a full selection of cocktails, especially those with a summer flair, and wine connoisseurs will find wine lists that reflect a wide selection of vineyards and vintages. A few restaurants permit guests to bring their own choice of wines to enjoy with dinner. Wildwood Crest at the southern tip of Five Mile Beach, is a dry community but there are several popular restaurants in the Diamond Beach area that serve cocktails, wines and beer.

For families on vacation, there are plenty of child-friendly restaurants that cater especially to the younger set with special menus and pries. Many of these dining places have built a solid reputation over the years providing good home-styled meals with generous portions at reasonable prices.

Did we mention those homemade desserts, the trademark of several local places that bring people back night after night and year after year? Early bird specials appeal to many visitors and local restaurants are more than eager to add value to your dining dollars.

Take-out food is always an option - a snack to enjoy in the quiet of your room, on the balcony or just for a change of pace after a busy day of sightseeing, kayaking or strolling 'the boards.' Most of the local restaurants will provide food to go with just a call ahead to let them know what your taste buds need for total satisfaction.

If the evening is just too wonderful to end, a few restaurants offer dessert service until around midnight, perhaps with a cappuccino or a chocolate martini to top off another fabulous day.

For the best recommendations of where to eat and the specialties of area restaurants, ask the local residents for their favorite restaurant, coffee shop or sandwich place and you're sure to get a ringing endorsement for some little, out of the way place that you might have missed.

Most restaurants accept major credit cards and dinner reservations aren't always needed.
