The Wildwoods Named One of the World’s ‘10 Great Towns, Villages and Neighborhoods for Architecture Buffs’ by CNN Travel

The Wildwoods, NJ – September 18, 2014 – The Wildwoods’ flashy neon signs, bold colors and exotic architectural designs have caught the eyes of many visitors near and far – and now the Wildwoods can add CNN Travel to the list. The Wildwoods’ ‘Doo Wop’ Mid-Century architecture has been named among ‘10 great towns, villages and neighborhoods for architecture buffs’ by this widely respected worldwide information source.

CNN Travel touted the Wildwoods’ incredibly unique architecture as well as the Doo Wop Experience Museum as ultimate must-see sites. CNN also highlighted the refurbished Caribbean Motel, now listed on the National Register of Historical Places, as a go-to for an authentic Doo Wop experience. The Wildwoods share a spot on the list along with Alberobello in Italy, Taketomi Village in Japan and Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain – to name a few.

CNN Travel – a resource for travel news and vacation tips – shares some of the world’s best and most exciting destinations. “We’re extremely pleased to be recognized by CNN Travel for one of the great, unique and iconic attractions in the Wildwoods – our Doo Wop architecture,” said John Siciliano, Executive Director for the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement & Development Authority (GWTIDA). “It’s a testament to the spirit and dedication of everyone involved with preserving the architectural heritage that helps define the Wildwoods as a unique tourism destination,” he added.

The Wildwoods Doo Wop District is home to the largest concentration of preserved mid-century Doo Wop buildings in the country.

The doo-wop style hotels and businesses found in the Wildwoods feature plastic palm trees towering over kidney-shaped pools, angular roof lines and/or bold neon signs touting whimsical names and flamboyant themes.

“This is a tribute to the many owners of America’s largest collection of Doo Wop design motels and buildings,” said Dan MacElrevey, president of the Doo Wop Preservation League. “These dedicated owners have preserved the eccentric designs and imaginative neon signs typical of these fascinating buildings while upgrading the interiors and maintaining the high level of resort services for which these properties are known,” he said.

The Wildwoods have also been recently recognized as one of the top three Boardwalks in the nation as a Best Boardwalk for Food by TheDailyMeal.com; #1 Boardwalk in the nation by FamilyVacationCritic.com in 2014, 2013 and 2012; and the Wildwoods’ Morey’s Amusement Piers were named in 2014 among the Top 25 Piers in the World by TripAdvisor and among the Top 10 Piers by Coastal Living Magazine.
