“Watch the Tram Car Please” – An Iconic Wildwoods Boardwalk Gem

The Wildwoods, NJ – July 18, 2024 – On the Wildwoods Boardwalk, visitors delight in the numerous sights and sounds, but no sight or sound is as iconic as the world-famous Sightseer Tram Cars and their signature recorded warning, “Watch the Tram Car Please.”

A staple in the Wildwoods, the Wildwoods Boardwalk Sightseer Tram Cars are rolling into their 76th season in 2024. Tram Cars service the two-and-a-half-mile Boardwalk – transporting hundreds of thousands of passengers each year.

Whether you’re riding in the Tram, or walking along the boards, it’s hard not to join along when you hear “Watch the Tram Car Please.” Recorded in 1963 by North Wildwood resident Floss Stingel, “Watch the Tram Car Please” has grown to become one of the most recognizable phrases at the Jersey Shore.

In 1949, businessman Gilbert Ramagosa purchased the five-original diesel Tram Car engines and trains that were custom built for the 1939 World’s Fair in Flushing, New York. The diesel engines were converted into environmentally friendly, battery-powered engines before being introduced on the Wildwoods Boardwalk that year and have been in continuous operation since. Each Tram Car can run for up to 12 hours on a single charge from their 2,000-pound electric batteries.

Operated by the private, nonprofit Wildwoods Boardwalk Special Improvement District Management Corporation (WSID) since 2004, the Tram Cars continue to be one of the most recognizable icons of the Wildwoods, and a must-do experience for all visitors.

To show thanks and appreciation to long-time Sightseer Tram Car employee John “Gigi” Gigliotti, a new tram engine called “The Gig” was commissioned in 2016 with the first new Tram Car Engine since 1963. A former railroad conductor and Tram Car driver, Gigi serves as the Tram Car Safety Director.

The one-way, one-time, full-price fare in 2024 is $5 during the summer months. Day pass wristbands are also available for $13 and provide unlimited rides until 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to download the free “Wildwoods Tram Car” app on their smartphones for cashless and touchless transactions.
